Oil Prices Soar Past $100 as Middle East Tensions Escalate
Oil prices have surged past $100 a barrel for the first time since July following a series of US strikes on Iranian tankers, according to market data.
The latest escalation in tensions between the two countries has led to a 2% increase in Brent crude oil prices, with the asset briefly surpassing $100 per barrel before dipping to around $99.50.
This uptick in prices is particularly concerning as it comes at a time when consumers are already grappling with inflationary pressures and potential supply chain disruptions due to the colder seasons approaching.
Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor, warned that 'the outlook in the Middle East has recently worsened once more' and that any signs of detente between the US and Iran seem elusive.
