Oil Prices Soar Past $100/Barrel Amid Global Geopolitical Tensions
Global crude oil prices have surged past US$100 per barrel after security strikes on Saudi Arabian infrastructure, Middle Eastern shipping disruptions, and sustained drone attacks on Russian refineries. The price increase has been driven by physical supply losses, which have severely impacted global distillate markets.
The recent attacks have had a significant impact on the global energy market, with US retail diesel prices reaching an all-time high of US$6.06 per gallon. The compounding geopolitical constraints are affecting international energy traders, commercial logistics providers, and industrial power consumers.
OPEC's latest report shows that total OPEC crude production averaged 24.08 million barrels per day, but regional disruptions triggered sharp localized declines, including a 399 Mb/d fall in Iranian output to 2.08 MMb/d and a 75 Mb/d drop in Saudi Arabian production to 7.28 MMb/d.
The price movement has also been driven by hedge funds and money managers expanding their net long positions in Brent and WTI futures by 12%.
