Oil Prices Spike Above $85 as Middle East Tensions Escalate
Oil prices surged above $85 per barrel on Monday as tensions in the Middle East and ongoing US-Iran negotiations fueled concerns about disruptions to regional supplies.
The Brent crude futures for October traded at $85.15 per barrel, up 1.92% from the previous close of $83.55.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated that negotiations with Oman regarding transit through the Strait of Hormuz are progressing 'smoothly and constructively'.
Baqaei added that mechanisms will be established to ensure safe maritime traffic, protect the environment, and address 'maritime crimes', but emphasized that the primary objective is to reach a lasting understanding that ensures complete security in the strait.
US President Donald Trump signaled that he is prepared to rely on economic pressure on Iran rather than launching a new military offensive, stating that Iran is 'in very bad shape' financially and struggling to pay its troops.
