Oil Prices Stabilize at High Levels Amid Fragile Market Equilibrium

The oil and gas market has maintained elevated price levels due to a fragile equilibrium. Oil prices have stabilized at high levels, while the gas market remains volatile.

Brent oil prices remained steady in August, supported by increased flows through the Strait and the absence of further military escalation. The spread between Brent futures and physical prices narrowed since early June, driven by bypass usage and declining Chinese oil imports.

The European gas market saw a significant price increase due to low LNG flows and competition from Asia during summer months. European spot gas prices rose sharply over the past month, with TTF prices increasing.

The rise in electricity prices accelerated in Europe due to heatwaves and constrained nuclear power production. This led to increased reliance on more expensive resources, driving up electricity costs.
