Oil Prices Surge Above $100 as Iran Conflict Continues
Oil prices have surged above $100 per barrel for the first time since before Memorial Day as concerns over the Iran-US conflict and its impact on global crude supply persist. The price of Brent crude, the international standard, rose another 4% to surpass $105 per barrel.
The jump in oil prices has sent shockwaves through the markets, with stocks falling across much of Europe and Asia. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 153 points, or 0.3%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.6%. The Nasdaq composite was down 0.9%.
The higher oil prices are also contributing to rising inflationary pressures, with the wholesale level accelerating to 5.4% last month from 4.8% in July. This could lead to higher prices for consumers and businesses alike, as retailers may pass on these increases to shoppers.
