Oil Prices Surge Above $100 as Shipping Attacks Heighten Supply Risks
Oil prices have surged above $100 per barrel as attacks on shipping and the risk of supply disruptions through strategic maritime routes heighten concerns about market balance.
The Brent crude futures price rose by 94 cents, or 0.93%, to $102.15 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was up $1.45, or 1.51%, at $97.50 a barrel.
Analyst John Evans of PVM notes that the conflict in the region will likely last longer than expected, leading to tighter market balance and higher prices if oil supplies decline.
The situation is further complicated by China's increasing demand for crude oil, which could amplify the impact of supply disruptions and push prices even higher.
