Oil Prices Surge Amid Shale Industry Maturation

The global oil and gas industry is undergoing significant changes that may shape its future over the next decade. One of the key trends is the steady rise in oil prices, which has exceeded expectations despite major producers maintaining their spending plans largely unchanged.

Exploration activity has been declining for years as operators make smaller discoveries, leading to a decrease in new finds. In response, countries around the world are offering more attractive fiscal terms to attract investment and replenish their reserves.

In the US, tight-oil output was expected to peak this year but instead saw a modest increase due to stronger crude prices, pushing output to a record 13.6 million barrels per day. However, the country's role as the world's primary source of supply growth is uncertain as the Permian Basin, which accounts for almost half of US supply, slows down.

The Permian Basin saw year-over-year production growth slow to just 130,000 barrels per day in July, compared to annual increases of up to 500,000 barrels per day during its post-pandemic era. This slowdown is a clear sign that the shale revolution has entered a more mature phase.
