Oil Prices Surge Amid Strait of Hormuz Shipping Concerns
Global oil prices rose on August 7 amid concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key transportation artery.
Brent crude futures increased by 80 cents, or 0.97%, to $83.29 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures rose by 64 cents, or 0.83%, to $77.93 per barrel, according to analysts at Rystad Energy.
The oil market is reacting to a draft plan released by Iran regarding transit conditions through the Strait of Hormuz, which would impose fees on ships passing through the strait and ban vessels from 'hostile' countries, including the US and Israel.
'Oil prices are reacting to the draft plan published by Iran regarding transit conditions through the Strait of Hormuz,' said Lin Ye, vice president of commodities at Rystad Energy. 'The proposed agreement would be difficult to implement due to US sanctions and insurance restrictions that could affect such payments.'
