Oil Prices Surge Amid US Stocks Decline
US stocks dropped on Tuesday as investors returned from a three-day weekend. The S&P 500 fell 0.4% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 520 points, or 1%, by 10 am Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite was down 0.3%. Brent crude oil prices rose 1% to $97.95 after briefly reaching $99.46.
Higher oil prices have contributed to rising inflation concerns in the US. On Thursday, the August report on wholesale inflation is expected to show a 5.4% acceleration from July's 4.7%. Consumer inflation data, due out Friday, is forecasted to ease slightly to 3.3% from July's 3.4%.
These reports will be crucial in determining the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates next week. The Fed has traditionally raised its main rate when inflation is high, which could slow the economy and rein in prices. However, President Trump has advocated for lower interest rates, potentially giving the economy a boost.
The bond market remains under pressure, with the 10-year Treasury yield near its highest level since autumn 2023 at 4.78%. Higher yields make it more expensive for companies to borrow and could further weigh on stocks. On Wall Street, Boston Scientific fell 2.7% after a cybersecurity incident impacted sales forecasts.
