Oil Prices Surge as Iran-US Conflict Escalates Over Strait of Hormuz
Oil prices surged over 4% on Monday as tensions between Iran and the US escalated. The conflict is centered around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that carries nearly a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas.
Iran and the US traded demands for compensation, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stating that Washington must meet several conditions before the strait can be reopened. These conditions include an end to sanctions and military threats, as well as payment for 'all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded.'
US President Donald Trump echoed this demand, saying Iran must pay compensation for its actions. The US and Iran are not currently engaged in talks, with Araqchi stating that Tehran will not start negotiations while Washington is in breach of an interim deal signed in June.
The increase in oil prices was also driven by other factors, including attacks on Russian refineries and tankers in the Black Sea, as well as the potential for tighter supplies due to the conflict. The Iran-aligned Houthis struck Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery on Sunday, further threatening supply.
