Oil Prices Surge as Strait of Hormuz Uncertainty Persists

Oil prices rose for a fourth consecutive day on August 19 due to supply uncertainty related to the Strait of Hormuz export route. Brent crude futures climbed by 26 cents, or 0.29%, to $91.28 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures increased by 37 cents to $85.31 a barrel.

The recent developments in the Middle East have sparked concerns about the safety of oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the global market. Iran's assertion that the strait remains shut to shipping contradicts US President Donald Trump's claim that it is open. A temporary ceasefire agreement expired on August 17, and Iran is reportedly moving to a 'fully offensive' military posture due to the diplomatic stalemate.

To mitigate the risks associated with passing through the Strait of Hormuz, Iraq's cabinet approved mechanisms for exporting Iraqi crude oil through local and international companies via multiple export outlets. The new contracts will run for three months starting September 1.
