Oil Prices Surge Back to Pre-Summer Levels
Oil prices have surged again, reaching levels not seen since May, and this is weighing heavily on Wall Street. Brent crude has climbed by 4% to surpass $105 per barrel for the first time in several months.
The increase in oil prices has led to higher inflation worries, pushing the price of a gallon of regular gasoline to nearly $4.28 across the US, up 34% from last year. This jump is not only affecting consumers at the pump but also through higher prices for goods transported by truck.
Wholesale inflation in the US accelerated to 5.4% in August, and a report on Friday will show how much price pressure US consumers are feeling. Typically, the Federal Reserve would respond to high inflation by raising interest rates, which could slow down the economy and curb prices.
