Oil Prices Surge on Geopolitical Tensions
Global oil prices are rising again due to uncertainty surrounding the situation between the United States and Iran. As of August 10, October futures for Brent crude on London's ICE exchange rose by 5.09% to $87.80 per barrel.
September futures for U.S. WTI crude also increased, up 5.44% to $82.44 per barrel. The rising prices are linked to the risk of supply disruptions due to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil transportation.
The situation has been further complicated by U.S. President Donald Trump's statement that Washington is prioritizing economic pressure on Iran rather than a new military offensive. This has led investors to price in an additional premium for geopolitical risk.
For Kazakhstan, the rising oil prices pose significant risks to the economy. Oil and gas industry expert Askar Ismailov noted that instability in the oil market increases risks for the economy, affecting inflation, investment activity, and financial markets.
