Oil Prices Surge Past $100 as Tanker War Intensifies

The crude oil market has reached a new threshold as Brent Last Day Financial Futures Current Contract (NOV6) broke above $100 per barrel for the first time since July, with gains of approximately 25% since early August.

This recent escalation in the conflict between the US and Iran is not just about military facilities; it's now expanded to tankers, oil infrastructure, and maritime shipping routes, making it an economic war that pressures the opponent's energy revenues and logistics.

The renewed intensity of the conflict has resulted in a qualitative shift from targeting military capabilities to affecting supply chains. On September 8-9, US Central Command announced it had destroyed five Iran-linked crude oil tankers, while Iran stated it had attacked ten vessels around the Strait of Hormuz and launched ballistic missiles at a base in Jordan used by the US military.

The impact on the crude oil market is not just about geopolitical risk premiums. Tanker traffic has remained nearly at a standstill over the past week, with only six cargo ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz on September 8, down from approximately 125 large commercial vessels daily before the war.

As the conflict intensifies, analysts are now looking beyond the intensity of combat and focusing on whether crude oil actually flows. The primary scenario is one where US naval blockades or attacks on tankers become protracted, leading to supply constraints even if missile attacks decrease.
