Oil Prices Surge to $109.12 Amid Ongoing Middle East Tensions
Oil industry stocks have seen a rise in value following another increase in crude prices. The price of Brent crude oil has reached $109.12, up 4.3% from previous levels. This surge is partly due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which are affecting global oil supplies.
A significant blow to Saudi Arabia's oil exports came last week when an attack damaged a major pipeline. The pipeline was being used as an alternative route to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian attacks have been disrupting oil tanker traffic.
Despite some hopes for a de-escalation in tensions between Iran and the US, the situation remains fluid. According to ING commodities strategists Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey, sizable volumes of oil are still moving through the strait.
The rising cost of oil has had an impact on consumer prices, with the average gallon of regular gasoline now costing nearly $4.32 in the US. This upward pressure on inflation is expected to lead to a Federal Reserve interest rate hike at its next meeting.
