Oil Prices Surge Towards $100 Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
Oil prices rose sharply on Wednesday, heading towards $100 per barrel as tensions in the Middle East escalated. The Brent crude futures price climbed to $99.49 a barrel, its highest level since late June. This rise is attributed to attacks on several Saudi cities by Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen, which have further embroiled the US ally in the conflict.
The situation has also led to inflation worries, with traders expecting central banks to tighten their monetary policies. The US Consumer Price Index data is due on Friday, and markets are anticipating a potential hike in interest rates. Brent crude has become one of the clearest signals for market sentiment, with prices nearing $100.
The Asian stock markets were subdued on Wednesday, with stocks in Sydney slipping 0.3% while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 0.6%. However, some regional benchmarks showed gains, including Japan's Nikkei which rose 0.6% following a 1.7% tumble the previous day.
