Oil Prices Surge, Trade Tensions Escalate: Stocks Fall Across the Board
The stock market experienced a decline on Tuesday as oil prices surged towards $100 per barrel and US-Canada trade tensions escalated.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 1.18% to close at 52,786.07, while the S&P 500 declined 0.58% to 7,673.52, and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.32% to 26,421.41, marking back-to-back losses for all three major indices.
The confluence of pressures contributing to the selloff included rising oil prices, renewed geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, and Canada's implementation of retaliatory tariffs on American goods.
Goldman Sachs raised its oil price forecasts, projecting Brent crude at $85 per barrel in December, up $5 from prior estimates, and signaling potential upside to $120 per barrel given ongoing supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.
