Oil prices plummeted on Tuesday as the United States shifted its approach to pressuring Iran, opting for economic sanctions over military strikes. This move eased fears of renewed war in the region.

Brent crude futures fell by 3.9% to settle at $88.58 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude declined by 3.1% to close at $82.36 a barrel. These losses come after the US government announced a new package of sanctions targeting Iran and its enablers.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the efforts as an 'economic D-Day,' adding that maximum economic pressure makes a return to broad military operations unlikely for now.
