Oil Prices Tumble on Hopes for Strait of Hormuz Breakthrough
Crude oil prices continued their downward trend on August 5, slipping below $80 per barrel for Brent and nearing $75 per barrel for WTI. The decline marks a third consecutive session of losses, with weekly drops exceeding 10%.
Hopes of a breakthrough in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz have strengthened diplomatic progress. Qatar confirmed an interim proposal had been drafted, while Washington and Tehran suggested negotiations were moving forward. US President Donald Trump suspended military action against Iran to allow diplomacy to continue.
Iran is reportedly considering a proposal that would allow European nations to assist in clearing mines from the waterway. Talks with Oman on ensuring safe maritime passage are also advancing. Saudi Arabia continues discussions with Yemen's Houthi rebels through Omani mediators.
