Oil Producers Target Late 2027 for Pathways Carbon Capture Decision
Canada's largest oil producers are working towards a final investment decision for their proposed carbon capture and storage project, Pathways, by late 2027. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Canadian oil sands production and is a key component of the country's plan to grow oil production while keeping emissions in check.
Kendall Dilling, president of the Oil Sands Alliance industry group, believes that oil sands companies will reach definitive agreements with Alberta and federal governments on fiscal terms by mid-November. This would pave the way for a decision to proceed with the multi-billion-dollar project.
The Pathways project is a proposed CO2 transportation pipeline and storage hub that could reduce emissions from Canadian oil sands production. It's a key piece of a non-binding agreement signed earlier this year between Alberta and Canada, which aims to grow Canada's oil production while tackling climate change.
