Oil Slicks Detected Off Coasts of Iran and Oman via Satellite Imagery
Two oil slicks have been detected off the coasts of Iran and Oman using satellite imagery. The first, located near the Hallaniyat Islands in southern Oman, covers approximately 300 square kilometers and is believed to be caused by a tanker that ran aground on August 3. The second, near Qeshm and Hengam islands off the southern coast of Iran, spans around 100 square kilometers.
The satellite observations were made by researchers at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), who analyzed imagery acquired between August 7 and August 10. Dr. Manoochehr Shirzaei, Chief Scientist of UNU-INWEH's Global Environmental Intelligence Lab, noted that satellite Earth observation can provide an independent view of pollution across hundreds or thousands of square kilometers.
The oil slicks pose a significant threat to sensitive ecosystems in the region, including coral reefs, tidal flats, and mangrove forests. The Hara Biosphere Reserve near Qeshm island is home to extensive mangrove systems and provides habitat for migratory birds, green turtles, and critically endangered hawksbill turtles.
The researchers are continuing to examine satellite observations of the region to determine how the slicks have evolved over time and which coastal ecosystems may be exposed.
