Oil Spill Threatens Environmental Disaster in Persian Gulf

A major oil spill has occurred in Iranian waters near Qeshm and Sirri islands, sparking concerns about an environmental disaster that could affect Oman.

Satellite imagery verified by Reuters shows two massive oil slicks in the Persian Gulf. One is linked to a collision between the Liberia-flagged cargo vessel Minoan Pioneer and an unidentified projectile off the coast of Oman on August 3.

The incident, which may have also affected Qeshm Island, was believed to be an Iranian attack while the vessel was transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The pollution is causing severe environmental damage to the region.

Brian Barnes, a satellite oceanographer at the University of South Florida, warns that 'the longer that the oil is leaking into an environment, the more it can spread out and cause damage to ecosystems, coastlines.'
