Oil Supply Shortage Deepens as Iran War Escalates
The International Energy Agency (IEA) warns that global oil markets are facing a severe supply squeeze due to renewed hostilities in the Iran war. Despite a brief ceasefire, shipping and regional energy infrastructure have been disrupted, leading to higher fuel prices and a decline in demand.
The world faces a shortfall of 1.8 million barrels per day this quarter, more than double earlier projections. For 2026 as a whole, the deficit will likely be the widest in five years. Stockpiles are tightening again even as high fuel prices prompt the agency to deepen estimates for a decline in global oil demand this year.
While some production losses have been tempered by workaround measures such as alternative pipelines and shuttle tankers, output remains short of pre-conflict levels. The IEA reports that nine million barrels per day have escaped in the past week, almost half prewar volumes.
