Oman Ditches Fossil Fuels for Renewables in Ambitious Green Transition
Oman, an oil-rich nation in the Middle East, is shifting its focus towards renewable energy as part of its green transition goals. The government has introduced new national policies to expand Oman's green energy and cleantech industries, encouraging private investment in the sector.
The Ministry of Energy and Minerals launched a revised net-zero emissions strategy and carbon markets regulatory framework this year, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by mid-Century. Oman aims to become a major green hydrogen and renewable energy hub in the region, strengthening its energy security and enhancing its trade position.
Oman's Minister of Energy, Salim Al Aufi, emphasized the importance of adopting the new plan, calling it a strategic step towards a robust, sustainable, low-carbon economy. The government aims to reduce carbon emissions by 33% by 2035 through greater energy diversification and development of carbon capture and storage technologies.
