Oman's Coastline Hit by Oil Spill from Grounded Tanker

Oman's coastline is facing an oil spill crisis after crude oil from a grounded tanker reached its shores. The Caroline Bezengi, a sanctioned vessel believed to be part of Russia's 'shadow fleet', was carrying nearly 1 million barrels of oil when it reported an explosion in June.

The oil leak has been spreading quickly from the partially submerged tanker off the shores of Qabiliyah Island, endangering a marine protected area. Oman's Environment Authority said contamination has also reached the beaches of Ras Madrakah on mainland Oman, some 200 km to north of the island.

Experts warn that strong winds and currents may spread the spill further, affecting the southern coasts of Masirah Island, over 300 km north of the tanker's location. The incident has raised concerns about environmental damage and potential harm to marine life in the region.
