Oman's Diplomat Heads to Iran to Discuss Hormuz Passage
Oman's foreign minister will visit Iran on Tuesday to discuss ways to regulate the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for oil and gas shipping.
The visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Iran and Oman, two littoral states that share the strait. The two countries have been in talks to establish a new route through the strait, but no deal has yet been finalized.
Tehran has exerted control over Hormuz since February 28, requiring vessels to obtain permission and pay transit fees before using the waterway. The US wants the strait to return to its pre-war system of free navigation, while Iran insists that this will only happen if Washington meets its broader demands, including lifting its blockade on Iranian ports.
