ONGC Posts Windfall Quarter on Crude Surge Amid India's Energy Crisis
India's state-controlled energy producer ONGC posted a strong quarter due to rising crude prices. Brent crude, the global benchmark, averaged nearly 50% higher than its year-earlier level during the period. This surge in prices helped boost ONGC's profits, despite a weaker rupee and lower output.
The company, which accounts for two-thirds of India's oil output and more than half of its natural gas production, saw earnings from older legacy fields rise 5.4% and new deepwater fields earn 61.5% more than the same quarter last year. However, this growth is not enough to offset declining production from aging fields.
ONGC's results are significant because India relies heavily on imports for its oil and gas needs, with almost 90% of its oil and 50% of its natural gas coming from abroad. The company's ability to increase output will be crucial in reducing this dependence.
