OPEC+ Agrees to Boost Crude Production Amid Global Disruptions
OPEC+, the alliance of oil-producing countries, has agreed to increase crude production by approximately 188,000 barrels per day from September. This decision reverses earlier production cuts implemented in 2023.
The seven key OPEC+ producers, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman, reached this consensus.
However, the increased production quotas may not translate into additional oil supplies on the global market due to ongoing disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for 20% of global oil and gas exports, remains congested.
Russia's oil industry is also under pressure following repeated Ukrainian drone attacks targeting energy infrastructure. Russia's current production stands at around 9 million barrels per day, below its OPEC+ target of approximately 9.8 million barrels per day.
