OPEC Crude Output Plummets as Saudi Export Routes Disrupted
OPEC crude oil production plummeted by 900,000 barrels per day in August due to disruptions in Saudi Arabia's key export routes. The kingdom's crude exports dropped by nearly a third to 3.03 million bpd, their lowest level since May.
The decline was caused by attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi threats along the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb chokepoints, making shipping Saudi crude significantly more difficult.
Despite Iraq and Venezuela stepping up production, adding 340,000 bpd combined, it wasn't enough to offset Saudi Arabia's 1 million bpd decline. OPEC+ was unable to implement its fifth consecutive quota increase of 188,000 bpd for August across seven member states due to logistics and geopolitics.
