OPEC+ Lifts Oil Production Quotas Amid Regional Tensions

OPEC+ members have agreed to increase oil production quotas from September, aiming to offset supply disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East and Russia-Ukraine. According to Reuters, the group will boost output by approximately 188,000 barrels per day. However, market experts believe it may take time for this move to reflect in prices due to ongoing export restrictions through the Strait of Hormuz.

The OPEC+ decision comes after a brief ceasefire in June that had raised hopes for lasting peace in the region. The core members - Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Algeria, Kazakhstan, and Oman - have agreed on the production adjustment. Meanwhile, some analysts warn that managing potential surplus output may become a challenge once export flows normalize.

The existing output cut of around 2 million barrels per day is likely to continue this year, with some OPEC+ members seeking higher individual quotas in line with their increased production capacity. The group's decision to increase output has already had an impact on oil prices, with Brent crude falling by $1.03 and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dropping by $1.50 per barrel.
