OPEC+ Output Targets Soar Despite Gulf Security Risks
Kuwait's oil production has surged to its highest level in months, reaching 1.971 million barrels per day (bpd) in July, according to Reuters.
This marks a significant increase from June, when the country produced 1.65 million bpd, and even more so from May, when output was just 580,000 bpd.
The boost in production coincides with OPEC+'s decision to increase output targets by another 188,000 bpd from September, effectively unwinding the last portion of its production cuts agreed in 2023.
However, the situation in the Persian Gulf remains volatile, with security concerns and tanker traffic disruptions limiting the actual impact of the increased targets. Saudi Arabia has had to reroute its exports twice due to Yemeni Houthi attacks, while Kazakhstan's production is being hindered by Ukrainian drone attacks on a key oil export port.
Theoretically, OPEC+ should be producing 1.65 million bpd more than it did in 2023, but the reality of the situation on the ground suggests this will be challenging to achieve.
