Ottawa Fast-Tracks Proposed Alberta-B.C. Oil Pipeline Project
The federal government has initiated the fast-track process to designate a proposed pipeline connecting Alberta and British Columbia as a project of national interest. This move could expedite regulatory approvals under the Building Canada Act.
The proposed 1,250-kilometer pipeline aims to transport more than one million barrels of crude oil daily from Bruderheim, Alta., to a marine export terminal near Delta, B.C. Public comments on the proposal will be accepted until Sept. 18, while consultations with Indigenous communities and governments continue.
The project is backed by the Alberta government, Trans Mountain, the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, and Pembina Pipeline, which holds a 10% ownership stake.
Environmental Defence and the federal NDP have expressed criticism, arguing that the designation could weaken environmental oversight and promote further fossil fuel development. The federal government maintains that consultation will continue before making a final decision.
