Pakistan Announces One Million Tonnes Wheat Import Amid Price Spikes

The Pakistani government has made a decision to import one million tonnes of wheat in an effort to stabilize prices and meet demand.

This move comes after provincial governments requested action due to rising wheat and flour prices, which have shown no signs of abating. The average wheat price has risen to Rs. 4,611 per 40kg (Rs. 115 per kg), while the national average for flour is now at Rs1,288 per 10kg (Rs129 per kg).

A shortfall in wheat production was first flagged as early as April 29, 2026, with a projected deficit of 1.2 million tonnes for the 2026-27 marketing year. However, estimates vary significantly, and the Progressive Flour Millers Group has projected a wheat shortfall of 2.5 million tonnes.
