Pakistan Announces Plan to Import One Million Tonnes of Wheat Amidst Shortfall
The Pakistani government has decided to import one million tonnes of wheat in response to provincial demands. Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research Rana Tanveer Hussain announced the decision, stating it will help stabilize wheat and flour prices.
This move comes after The News reported on April 29 that Pakistan faced a projected shortfall of 1.2 million tonnes of wheat in its 2026-27 marketing year due to production deficits. As of July 2026, average wheat prices had surged to Rs4,611 per 40kg (Rs115 per kg), with province-wise prices ranging from Rs4,423 in Punjab to Rs5,100 in KP.
The Progressive Flour Millers Group estimates a wheat shortage of 2.55 million tonnes for the ongoing season, while PFMG President Majid Abdullah projected a gap of 2.5 million tonnes in demand and supply in Punjab alone. With a population of 268.13 million, Pakistan's overall wheat demand is estimated at 34.33 million tons.
