Pakistan Faces Night Blackouts Amid 3,400 MW LNG Shortfall
Pakistan is facing night blackouts due to a shortage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), resulting in a deficit of 3,400 megawatts. According to Power Minister Sardar Awais Leghari, LNG-fired plants normally carry a combined capacity of about 6,000 megawatts but output has collapsed as cargo deliveries slip and spot purchases stall.
The minister confirmed that night-time load shedding has returned because LNG plants are shutting down after dark, leaving households without power. Leghari apologized for the severe outages and blamed external factors, stating that the crisis is an external factor.
Leghari promised that within one to two months, households will save thousands of rupees on their bills due to reduced consumption. He explained the arithmetic behind load shedding, saying every 500 to 600 megawatts of shortfall translates into a predictable slice of outage time.
