Pakistan Farmers Reject Government Decision on Genetically Modified Corn

The Pakistan Kisan Rabita Committee (PKRC), an organization representing farmers' interests, has expressed strong opposition to the government's decision to allow commercial cultivation of genetically modified (GM) corn. The committee argues that this move will compromise seed sovereignty and lead to corporate control over agriculture and food systems.

In a statement, the PKRC criticized the August 31 decision made by the Committee on GM Corn, established by the prime minister, which aimed to modernize agriculture and ensure safe coexistence of GM and conventional crops. However, the farmers' body believes that this will ultimately result in increased dependence on multinational seed suppliers.

The PKRC points out that the government's stance ignores the historical significance of seeds in maintaining farmer independence and food security. Local seed-saving practices and community exchange have allowed for the preservation of traditional crop varieties, which are now under threat due to corporate patenting models.
