Pakistan Imports One Million Tonnes of Wheat Amid Steady Price Hikes
The Pakistani government has announced plans to import one million tonnes of wheat in response to rising demand and prices. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain confirmed the decision, stating that it will help stabilize wheat and flour prices across the country.
Wheat prices have been steadily increasing, with the average price reaching Rs. 4,611 per 40kg (Rs. 115 per kg) in the first week of July 2026. Province-wise, prices vary, ranging from Rs. 4,423 in Punjab to Rs. 5,100 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The shortfall was projected as early as April 29, 2026, with an estimated deficit of 1.2 million tonnes for the 2026-27 marketing year. However, estimates from the Progressive Flour Millers Group (PFMG) suggest a wheat shortage of 2.5 million tonnes.
The government's decision to import wheat comes as Pakistan faces a pronounced supply deficit in its staple grain market. With a population of 268.13 million and an estimated demand of 34.33 million tonnes, the country is struggling to meet its wheat needs.
