Pakistan Power Cuts Worsen as US-Iran Conflict Disrupts LNG Supplies
Pakistan is facing power cuts due to delays in the arrival of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) amid supply disruptions in the Gulf caused by the US-Iran conflict.
The country generated 24 percent of its electricity from hydel, 31 percent from coal, one percent from furnace oil, 22 percent from nuclear plants, and 17 percent from gas, according to official figures.
Energy supply disruptions have delayed several oil and gas supplies to Pakistan, resulting in periodic power outages. Consumers are facing up to three-hour outages at night due to a shortfall of 3,600 megawatts, which resulted from the delay in an RLNG cargo and a reduction of 195 MWs at Mangla.
The Power Division spokesperson apologized for the temporary load management during nighttime due to unavailability of RLNG. The US-Iran conflict has disrupted energy and cargo supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing global oil and gas prices up.
