Pakistan Warns Houthis as Saudi Oil Tankers Come Under Fire

Pakistan condemned recent attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi militia, warning that any threat to its maritime interests could be met with force.

The country has a trade and security relationship with Saudi Arabia, with Pakistani-flagged vessels frequently visiting Saudi ports. In 2024, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a mutual defense agreement, which includes a collective security clause that considers an attack on one country as an attack on both.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry expressed its 'unwavering commitment' to the pact after the Houthis launched missiles at southern Saudi Arabia. The country also has ties with Iran and has been a key mediator between Tehran and Washington to end the Iran war.

Analysts say Pakistan is unlikely to provide arms or troops to support Saudi Arabia, but could offer defensive engagement such as intelligence sharing, air-defense cooperation, maritime surveillance, and protecting critical Saudi infrastructure.
