Pakistani Government Approves Wheat Import Amid Depleted Reserves
Pakistan has approved the import of one million tonnes of wheat to strengthen national reserves and address potential supply shortages. The decision comes after the country's strategic wheat stocks, held by the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO), nearly ran out.
The Economic Coordination Committee approved the import through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan, with a steering committee formed to oversee preparations and ensure transparency in the import process.
Pre-shipment inspections of imported wheat and provincial funding are key conditions that must be met before imports begin. The government faces pressure to maintain adequate stocks and prevent potential shortages on domestic markets.
