Pakistan's Inflation Soars 8.35% Amid Rising Food Prices
Consumers in Pakistan continue to face difficulties purchasing various commodities due to rising inflation. The weekly inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Index (SPI), rose by 8.35% year-on-year for the week ending September 3.
The prices of several essential items increased during the week, including onions, which saw a 26.30% surge in price. Tomatoes also witnessed a 2.55% increase in price, while potatoes and wheat flour experienced slight rises of 0.96% and 0.88%, respectively.
On the other hand, significant year-on-year increases were observed in the prices of onions (162.75%), LPG (53.61%), diesel (37.70%), petrol (31.01%), electricity for Q1 (25.24%), wheat flour (16.86%), and several other items.
According to Younus Soomro, a tomato grower, the delayed supply of Iranian tomatoes was partly responsible for the price hike in tomatoes. However, he expressed hope that prices may stabilize with the expected arrival of tomatoes from Thatta, Sindh, later this month.
