Palm Oil Dominance by 2050: Indonesia Poised to Meet 60% of Global Demand
Indonesia is poised to play a crucial role in meeting global vegetable oil demand by 2050, according to Tungkot Sipayung, Founder and Executive Director of the Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (Paspi).
Globally, vegetable oil consumption is rising due to population growth, increasing incomes, and industrialization. By 2050, global demand for palm oil will surge significantly, driven by a projected world population exceeding 10 billion.
Palm oil already accounts for approximately 41.4 percent of the world's total vegetable oil production, despite covering only around 29 million hectares, relatively small compared to other major crops like soybean and rapeseed.
According to Tungkot, palm oil boasts advantages over other vegetable oils, including higher productivity (eight to ten times greater) and potential for further growth through improved plantation practices and technological innovation. He emphasizes that the industry's competitive pricing also makes it more accessible to low-income groups in various countries.
