Pennsylvania Farmers Plagued by Fertilizer, Diesel Price Hikes, Freeze, and Labor Shortages

As Pennsylvania farmers struggle to recover from a series of crises, including soaring fertilizer and diesel prices, a freakish freeze, and labor shortages, state legislators are stepping in with policy proposals aimed at supporting the $133 billion agricultural sector.

The price hike for nitrogen fertilizer, manufactured from oil affected by the U.S.-Iran war, has been particularly devastating. From $500 to $700 per ton within weeks of the conflict's start, and eventually reaching nearly $1,000 a ton, the costs have doubled for many farmers like Mike Reskovac in Fayette County.

Reskovac, who has had to borrow over $10,000 to meet the additional fertilizer costs, estimated that his farm spent an extra $15,000 on fuel and fertilizer this year. The soaring price of diesel fuel, caused by the same war-related issues, further exacerbated the challenges for farmers.

The crisis has led to a severe labor shortage, with many immigrant workers leaving the state due to the federal immigration crackdown. State Rep. Dan Moul emphasized that lawmakers' goal is to 'keep you in business,' while acknowledging that they cannot make up for lost profits or provide significant financial support.
