Pennsylvania's Data Centers Ignite Appalachian Natural Gas Boom
Appalachia is entering a pivotal new phase driven by power generation demands. The region is expected to see significant growth, particularly in the Marcellus and Utica shales, as natural gas demand surges from data centers for artificial intelligence (AI).
A recent executive order by Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has removed AI data centers from the state's fast-track permitting system, but experts predict that the call on natural gas will still increase, generating growth in the region for the first time in years.
However, infrastructure bottlenecks continue to create regional basis discounts and prevent abundant natural gas from reaching the Northeast, reducing volatile prices there. According to Marcellus Shale Coalition President Jim Welty, new demand centers are emerging to create a potentially pivotal period of growth for the region.
