Pentagon Invests in Venezuelan Oil Deal with Controversial Partner
The Pentagon's Office of Strategic Capital has made significant investments in the US defense industry since its inception in 2022, but it has taken a sharp turn with its involvement in an oil production deal between the US and Venezuela. The deal was announced by President Donald Trump on Friday, marking a new partnership between the US government and private oil producer North American Blue Energy Partners.
The company's founder, Alejandro Betancourt López, is a powerful figure in international commerce, but he has also been under investigation for money laundering and tax fraud in Spain and Switzerland. Despite this, Rubio wanted to bring Betancourt to Venezuela to work on oil deals and production, and the State Department recently pressed the Swiss and British governments to ease up on him.
The deal would give the US government a 35% stake in North American Blue Energy Partners through warrants, which are financial instruments that can be bought and sold. The government would also have preferential access to much of the oil produced by the company, with a guaranteed 20% at production cost.
