Permian Basin Booms as Diamondback Energy Sets New Efficiency Records
Kaes Van’t Hof, CEO of Diamondback Energy, is optimistic about the future of the oil industry despite global upheaval. With over 15 years of experience in the sector, Van’t Hof has seen significant changes in the Permian Basin, where nearly half of the nation’s crude oil and about 20 percent of the country’s natural gas comes from.
Diamondback Energy is one of the largest publicly traded independent energy producers in the Permian Basin. Van’t Hof joined the company in 2016 after a career in investment banking and private equity, where he was familiar with Diamondback's story since its initial public offering (IPO) in 2012.
Van’t Hof attributes Diamondback's success to best-in-class execution, low-cost operations, and transparency. The company has grown significantly, from producing about 3,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOES) in 2012 to over 900,000 BOES today, a more than 300-fold increase in just under 15 years.
The Permian Basin's unique combination of a friendly regulatory environment, abundant oilfield services market, and high-quality rock makes it an attractive location for energy production. Van’t Hof notes that the basin has been around for over 100 years and is now producing a significant percentage of U.S. and global oil.
Van’t Hof also discusses the challenges facing the industry, including labor shortages and logistical constraints. He emphasizes the importance of retaining skilled workers and investing in infrastructure to maintain efficiency and competitiveness.
