Permian Basin Oil Companies Thrive on High Prices, Yet Remain Cautious
Oil and gas companies in the Permian Basin are experiencing a boost in earnings due to elevated wartime oil prices. ExxonMobil and Chevron have reported record production from the region, with Exxon hitting its highest levels ever.
The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil spot price averaged $95.75 a barrel in the second quarter, an increase of almost $24 per barrel from the first quarter average. This has reversed the decline in employment and new oil rigs in the Permian Basin and other parts of Texas.
However, companies are being cautious not to repeat the boom-bust cycles of the past decade. They are prioritizing capital discipline, avoiding excessive investments in drilling and exploration despite the high prices. Investors do not want to see companies increasing their spending significantly in a pricing environment that is still volatile.
