Pertamina Balances Oil Output with Low-Carbon Expansion
Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned energy company, is maintaining its oil and gas output while expanding low-carbon businesses to meet the country's growing energy demand. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
According to Muhammad Baron, vice president for corporate communications at Pertamina, 'the energy transition is not only about reducing emissions; it is also about ensuring Indonesia has energy sources that are increasingly diverse, sustainable, and drawn from domestic potential.'
Pertamina's strategy involves boosting oil and gas production, optimising refinery assets to maintain fuel supply and processing capacity, and developing renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. The company's low-carbon businesses include geothermal power, solar power, biofuels, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, and low-carbon hydrogen.
Pertamina operates 727 MW of installed geothermal capacity directly and has a further 1,205 MW through joint operation contracts. This represents about 70% of Indonesia's installed geothermal capacity.
