Petrobras Eyes LNG Exports Amid Asian Demand Growth
Petrobras is considering exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its giant offshore fields in Brazil as demand for LNG grows in Asia and other markets. According to Petrobras CEO Magda Chambriard, the company is assessing the possibility of exporting gas using LNG vessels.
The move comes as countries in Asia seek new LNG supply sources beyond Qatar, which is facing severe export constraints due to its war with Iran. Brazil's offshore gas potential has been largely underutilized, with more than half of the gas being reinjected into oil wells to boost crude production.
Petrobras may face a setback in Brazil if a proposed regulation requiring companies with significant market share to make part of their natural gas supply available to competitors is implemented. However, Chambriard's comments suggest that Petrobras is committed to exploring new opportunities for LNG exports, including the possibility of building a liquefaction facility.
