Petrobras Seeks LNG Export Boom in Rising Asian Demand
Petrobras, Brazil's state-owned energy giant, is exploring liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to capitalize on rising demand in Asia. CEO Magda Chambriard revealed that the company has partnered with Singapore-based shipbuilder Seatrium Ltd. to study technical solutions for processing and shipping gas from offshore fields.
The initiative aims to diversify supplies amid disruptions linked to the Iran conflict, which have tightened Qatar's LNG exports. Currently, over 50% of Brazil's natural gas is re-injected into oil reservoirs to enhance crude output.
Petrobras faces infrastructure and regulatory hurdles, including a draft rule that could mandate the company to allocate portions of its output to competitors. Chambriard emphasized that 'profitability is essential' and warned that forced supply-sharing could stall projects and deter investment.
